| Microstructure | Al matrix with Mg in solid-solution. When Mg content exceeds 3.5% it forms as Mg₂Al₃ precipitates. |
| Effect of Composition | Mg strengthens Al by solid-solution strengthening. Cr improves toughness and reduces susceptibility to stress corrosion by reducing grain size. Cr also increases strength slightly and has a tendency to color anodic films yellow. Mn and Cr improve resistance to intergranular corrosion. |
| Processing – Forming | Good general formability, particularly cold-forming. Not generally hot-worked. Can be strain-hardened. |
| Processing – Machining | Reasonable machinability though some specific alloys have poor machining characteristics. |
| Processing – Heat Treatment | Most cannot be hardened by heat treatment except those with higher Mg content. Low-temperature stabilization treatment used on some 5xxx alloys. |
| Processing – Joining | Very good weldability (although cracking due to high expansion may be a problem). |
| Processing – Surface Treatment | High quality anodizing ability. Painting, chemical etching, chemical conversion coating. |
