5. Delivery Conditions
5.1 Surface Condition
| Condition | Description |
| As-rolled (Standard) | Thin layer of scale with variable coloration. Standard delivery condition. |
| Descaled (By agreement) | Scale removed. Usually oiled. Available with trimmed edges (GK designation). |
| Skin-passed (Optional) | Light cold reduction pass. May be applied to either as-rolled or descaled. |
5.2 Oiling (Descaled Products)
- Descaled products usually delivered oiled (both surfaces)
- Neutral non-drying oil, free of impurities, uniformly spread
- Corrosion protection: 3 months under normal conditions
- Oil removable by alkaline solutions or usual solvents
- Unoiled delivery available on request (increased corrosion and scratch risk)
6. Surface Quality Requirements
Products shall be free from defects that would adversely affect use:
Prohibited Defects:
- Slivers
- Blow holes
- Seams
- Cracks or scratches that adversely affect use
- Defects causing failure, tooling damage, or welding difficulties
Permitted Minor Defects:
- Pores
- Small pits
- Small marks
- Small scratches
- Kinks from pay-off reels
- Slight coloration
Important Note:
- Coil delivery may have higher percentage of surface defects than sheet delivery
- Maximum rejection percentage should be agreed at time of order for coils
7. Surface Coating and Weldability
7.1 Surface Coating Suitability
- Suitable for metallic coating: hot dipping, electrodeposition
- Suitable for organic coatings
- Coating type must be specified at time of enquiry and order
7.2 Weldability
- Suitable for standard welding processes
- Welding process should be specified at enquiry/order (especially gas welding)
- For non-descaled products: welding process must account for scale layer
- Structural safety requirements should be specified if relevant
8. Testing and Inspection
8.1 Inspection Units
| Steel Grade | Inspection Unit (tonnes) |
| DD11 | 150 tonnes |
| DD12 | 100 tonnes |
| DD13 | 60 tonnes |
| DD14 | 40 tonnes |
8.2 Required Tests
- Tensile test (mandatory)
- Product chemical analysis (by agreement at enquiry/order)
8.3 Test Methods
- Tensile test: EN 10002-1
- Test pieces taken transverse to rolling direction (unless otherwise agreed)
- For t < 3 mm: Type 2 test piece (L₀=80mm, width=20mm)
- For t ≥ 3 mm: Proportional test piece (L₀=5.65√S₀, max width 30mm)
- Chemical composition: EN ISO 14284
9. Product Designation
Designation format: Product type + EN 10111 + Steel grade (name or number)
| Example | Description |
| Strip EN 10111 – DD13 | Hot rolled strip, grade DD13 |
| Strip EN 10111 – 1.0335 | Hot rolled strip, steel number 1.0335 (DD13) |
| Sheet EN 10111 – DD12 | Hot rolled sheet, grade DD12 |
10. Storage and Transportation
CRITICAL: Moisture control is essential!
- Moisture, especially condensation between sheets/laps, causes corrosion products
- Products must be transported and stored DRY
- Protect from moisture at all times
- Particularly important for as-rolled (non-oiled) products
- Full designation (product type + EN 10111 + grade)
- Nominal dimensions and ordered quantities
- If inspection documents required and their type (EN 10204)
- Special requirements for packing and marking
- Limits on mass and sizes of coils/bundles
- If products to be supplied skin-passed
- If products to be supplied descaled
- If products to be supplied with sheared edges
- If oiling not required (descaled products)
- If suitable for making specific part
- If external inspection required at manufacturer’s works
- Intended application (surface coating, welding technique)
12. Quick Reference – Grade Selection Guide
| Grade | Formability | Typical Applications | Key Features |
| DD11 | Basic | General purpose, simple bending, light forming | Most economical, form within 6 weeks, thickest available (up to 11mm) |
| DD12 | Good | Moderate forming, bending operations | Fully killed, 6 months property guarantee |
| DD13 | Very good | Complex forming, drawing operations | Higher elongation, automotive applications |
| DD14 | Excellent | Deep drawing, severe forming | Best formability, lowest strength, demanding applications |
13. Tolerances
Tolerances on dimensions and shape are specified in EN 10051 (Hot rolled products).
Note: Hot rolled tolerances (EN 10051) are wider than cold rolled tolerances (EN 10131).
