Hot Rolled Products of Structural Steels Part 1: General Technical Delivery Conditions

IMPORTANT: This is Part 1 (General Conditions) covering requirements common to all parts. For specific steel grades and properties, refer to Parts 2-6.

1. EN 10025 Series Overview

The EN 10025 series consists of 6 parts:

  • Angles (L-sections, equal and unequal leg)

  • Bulb flats
  • Rod

4. Manufacturing Process

4.1 Steel Making Process

  • At manufacturer’s discretion EXCEPT open hearth (Siemens-Martin) process is prohibited
  • Can be reported to purchaser if specified at time of order

4.2 Deoxidation

  • Method specified in Parts 2-6 for each steel grade

4.3 Delivery Conditions

Various heat treatment conditions specified in Parts 2-6:

  • As-rolled (+AR)
  • Normalized (+N)
  • Normalized rolled (+NR)
  • Thermomechanically rolled (+TM)
  • Quenched and tempered (+QT)

5. Chemical Composition

5.1 Ladle Analysis

  • Mandatory – must comply with values in Parts 2-6
  • Manufacturer shall report values for each cast

5.2 Product Analysis

  • Optional – only when specified at time of order
  • Purchaser specifies number of samples and elements to be determined
  • Limits given in Parts 2-6

5.3 Carbon Equivalent Value (CEV)

Calculated using IIW formula for weldability assessment:

CEV = C + Mn/6 + (Cr+Mo+V)/5 + (Ni+Cu)/15

  • All elements in % by mass
  • Must be reported in inspection document

6. Mechanical Properties

6.1 Required Properties

  • Tensile strength (Rm)
  • Yield strength (ReH or Rp0.2)
  • Elongation (A)
  • Impact strength (Charpy V-notch)

6.2 Important Notes on Heat Treatment

6.3 Impact Properties

  • Not required for nominal thickness < 6 mm
  • For test pieces < 10 mm wide: reduce minimum values proportionally to cross-sectional area
  • Normally verified only at lowest specified temperature unless otherwise agreed

6.4 Through-Thickness Properties (Z-direction)

  • Optional – per EN 10164 if agreed at time of order
  • Improved deformation properties perpendicular to surface
  • Important for thick plates in highly restrained welded joints

7. Technological Properties

7.1 Weldability

  • All grades suitable for standard welding processes
  • Thermomechanical steels (Part 4) have enhanced weldability vs normalized steels
  • CEV calculated for weldability assessment

7.2 Formability

  • Requirements specified in Parts 2-6 as applicable

7.3 Hot-Dip Zinc-Coating Suitability

  • Must be specified at time of enquiry/order if required
  • Applicable to Parts 2, 3, 4, and 6
  • Improves durability/corrosion protection

7.4 Machinability

  • General requirements given in Part 2

8. Internal Soundness

Products shall be free from internal defects that would prevent intended use.

Ultrasonic Testing (Optional):

  • Flat products ≥6mm: EN 10160
  • H beams and IPE beams: EN 10306
  • Bars: EN 10308

9. Testing and Inspection

9.1 Types of Inspection

9.2 Inspection Documents (EN 10204)

Must include information groups A, B, D, and Z per EN 10168:

  • Type 2.2: Manufacturer’s test report
  • Type 3.1: Inspection certificate validated by manufacturer’s inspector
  • Type 3.2: Inspection certificate validated by manufacturer AND independent body

9.3 Test Units

  • Specified in Parts 2-6 for each product type
  • Typically based on cast/heat number, grade, and thickness

9.4 Test Methods

  • Tensile test: EN 10002-1 (longitudinal for bars, transverse for plates where width permits)
  • Impact test: EN 10045-1 (Charpy V-notch)
  • Chemical analysis: EN ISO 14284

10. Sample Location and Orientation

10.1 Flat Products

  • Thickness ≤30mm: Longitudinal tensile test, samples midway between edge and centerline
  • Thickness >30mm: Transverse tensile test (width ≥600mm) or longitudinal (width <600mm)
  • Impact: Longitudinal, notch perpendicular to surface
  • For thickness ≥40mm (Parts 3,4,6): Impact at ¼ thickness position

10.2 Sections (Beams, Channels, Angles)

  • Samples from flange
  • Test pieces taken perpendicular to rolled surface
  • By agreement, may be taken from web at ¼ height

10.3 Bars and Rod

  • Diameter/thickness ≤25mm: Full section test piece if practical
  • Diameter/thickness >25mm: Machined test piece from mid-radius

11. CE Marking Requirements (Annex ZA)

For construction products under EU Construction Products Directive:

11.1 Regulated Characteristics

  • Tolerances on dimensions and shape
  • Elongation
  • Tensile strength
  • Yield strength
  • Impact strength
  • Weldability (chemical composition)
  • Durability (chemical composition)

11.2 Attestation of Conformity System

System 2+ applies:

  • Manufacturer responsibilities: FPC, initial type testing, routine testing
  • Notified body: Initial inspection of factory and FPC, continuous surveillance
  • FPC certificate required from notified body

11.3 Initial Type Testing

Required before first placement on market:

  • Intensive routine testing: 5 casts, minimum 6 products per cast
  • Supplementary testing (for certain high-strength grades): Transition curves, weldability tests

11.4 Required Inspection Document Types

12. Marking and Labelling

12.1 Required Marking

  • Grade, quality, and delivery condition
  • Cast number (for cast-based inspection)
  • Manufacturer’s name or trademark
  • External inspection mark (where applicable)

12.2 Marking Location

  • Close to one end or on end cut face
  • For bundles: on label attached to bundle or top product
  • Positioned to avoid confusion with regulatory marking (CE marking)

14. Mandatory Information from Purchaser

  • Quantity to be delivered
  • Product form (plate, beam, angle, etc.)
  • Reference to relevant Part (EN 10025-2 through EN 10025-6)
  • Steel name or number (e.g., S355J2+N)
  • Nominal dimensions and tolerance class
  • All required options (see Clause 13)
  • Inspection and testing requirements
  • Type of inspection document required

15. Retests

  • EN 10021 applies for all retests and resubmission
  • For strip/rod: retest after cutting additional section (max 20m) to remove coil end effect
  • Impact test retest: If average fails OR 2+ values below minimum OR any value <70% of minimum, test 3 more. Average of 6 must meet requirements.
