| Range of application | Steels for Cold Extrusion: These steels are used to make high-quality, mass-produced parts in general engineering, machinery, and vehicle manufacturing. Through several forming steps-such as forging, cold extrusion, pressing, bulging, and drawing (with surface and heat treatments between steps)-different part shapes can be produced. These parts have high density, strong fiber direction for better strength, smooth surfaces, and very accurate dimensions. Cold extrusion strengthens the steel by cold working. This increases hardness, tensile strength, and yield strength, which improves the performance of the finished part. In many cases, unalloyed steels can meet very high requirements that normally need alloyed steels when parts are made by machining and heat treatment. The cold-worked surface layer increases fatigue and vibration resistance. The smooth surface also gives good sliding and wear resistance, especially when covered with a strong phosphate coating. By aligning the metal fibers with the shape of the part, harmful stress concentrations can be avoided. Because cold extrusion uses high pressure in steel dies, the amount of deformation and the steel quality are limited by the maximum pressure allowed between the part and the tool. The choice of steel mainly depends on the part’s shape, the amount of cold deformation needed, and the mechanical strength required. Cold-formed parts can also be heat treated-hardened, tempered, or case-hardened-depending on the type of steel used. |
